Eastern Idaho is known as one of the best places for Fly Fishing; with the South Fork of the Snake River, Henry's Fork of the Snake River, the Teton River, Fall River, and many more equally amazing fly fishing tributaries, lakes and resevoirs close by.  On top of that, we want to highlight the businesses and community that supports the fly fishing industry in Eastern Idaho.  We will host the Teton Valley Fly Fishing Festival annually to build awareness & celebrate fly fishing and anglers alike!

Spring Fishing Report

The fishing on the Henry’s Fork has not disappointed this spring. The caddis-fly hatch has been plentiful and has enticed many large trout to the surface, as fishing conditions have been great! Traditionally, the salmon-fly hatch will take place on the lower Henry’s Fork and around Warm River any day now and last until early June. This is an exciting time to experience famed Henry’s Fork fishing! Shortly after the salmonfly hatch, follows the golden stones & drakes. By all accounts the weather and snow pack has cooperated this year and our expert guides agree circumstances point to a productive, awesome fishing season!

Review of the New Orvis Helios 2 Fly Rod. Pre-Order one today!

The newest fly rod from Orvis is another amazingly lightweight, yet powerful fly rod. The Helios 2 fly rod far surpasses its predecessor, the original Helios fly rod.

So the question is: What is so good about this new Helios 2 Fly Rod?

It’s lighter. In your hand, it is perfectly balanced and has a 20% reduction in swing weight (compared with the original Helios Fly Rod).

It’s Stronger. Orvis has a new proprietary material that is integrated into the tip of the fly rod to increase its strength to impact without adding weight. This translates to a nearly 100% stronger tip, at least that’s what the folks at Orvis told me! So bring on the Chuck n’ Duck streamers!

It’s Powerful & Smooth. Orvis redesigned the tapers on the Helios 2 Fly Rod so that the fly rod is perfectly tuned to transfer energy along a smoother curve. In the fly-fishing world, you will hear the word “dampening” every now and then. Some fly rods will vibrate or wobble at the end of the cast. This wobble or vibration reduces power and accuracy. Some of the best fly rods will “dampen” the wobble or vibration, which is the case for the Helios 2 fly rod. The new tapers and material that is used in the fly rod does this perfectly. The Helios 2 fly rod is smooth as butter, precise & accurate, and extremely powerful!

It’s Made in the U.S.A! All Helios 2 Fly Rods are made by hand in Orvis’ rod shop, in Vermont. Helios 2 was designed by anglers and built by anglers for fishing addicts.

It’s Beautiful! The Helios 2 has midnight blue blanks with accentuating wraps. The rod is then finished off with a UV-inhibiting paint coating. The California buckeye burl reel seat is unique on its own. No two reel-seats are the same! Finally, the carbon rod tube is unique as the Helios 2 fly rod. It is durable enough to throw in the back of your truck, but stylish enough to hang on your wall!

Trout TV features Three Rivers Ranch, Henry's Fork, and the Teton River

Three Rivers Ranch recently had the opportunity to host producer, Bob Asbury and Rich Birdsell from Trout TV. TroutTV, is a syndicated show airing weekly on about 35 stations throughout the upper northwest. The show travels to some of North America’s most coveted fishing locations and destinations. Three Rivers Ranch, having access to many of these legendary rivers, not to mention offering world class fly fishing accommodations and service will be featured on an upcoming TroutTV episode in their 2013 season. Three Rivers guide, Nick Minor had the opportunity to guide Bob and Rich during their stay. They hit the renowned Upper Henry’s Fork of the Snake and also the famed Teton River. These rivers were productive and offered some beautiful scenery and great fishing for Rich. Both men particularly enjoyed their day on the lower Teton, where Rich caught a beautiful 20 inch cutthroat trout. We will share more details as to when the Three Rivers Ranch episode will air, but in the meantime be sure to catch other thrilling episodes of TroutTV on any of these stations

Spring Fly Fishing on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho.

Three Rivers Ranch guide Todd Allen with Peggy P., spring fly-fishing on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho. Peggy sent in this picture in and said, "It was a great day, especially for me. I don't think I have caught that many fish in one day over 20 inches anywhere, excluding Alaska, but then that doesn't really count."

The lower section of the Henry's Fork has been fishing good. The stretch from Ashton Dam below Vernon Bridge is currently closed until memorial day and the confluence of Fall River at Chester Dam is dirty due to runoff. Right now you can try a Blue Winged Olive, Midge, or a Streamer. The Caddis and March Browns are right around the corner!

What does CFS mean? Fly Fishing the Henry's Fork & South Fork of the Snake in Idaho.

Now that spring is underway, many river systems are facing spring runoff.  You will probably hear or read about the term “CFS”.  You might hear something like, “The Henry’s Fork dropped 300 CFS.”  or “The South Fork of the Snake has been running at 14000 CFS for the last week.”  So what does CFS mean and why is it important for fly-fishing?

CFS literally means Cubic Feet per Second.  It is a unit of measurement for moving water.  If you are standing still on the edge of a river, one CFS would be a box 12” x 12” x 12” (or the size of a basketball) moving by you every second.

If you’re about to go fly-fish the Henry’s Fork, you check the Orvis Fishing Report and see that it is at 2750 CFS, sounds good right?  It depends.  If the flows have been steady for several days, it is good; however, it might be bad for fishing if the flows change 300 CFS everyday for the last week.  Dramatic stream flow changes tend to push fish around and also changes the consistency of hatches.  The best thing to look for is a steady and consistent CFS stream flow.   Some river systems are dependent on a managed dam; some free flowing rivers are dependent on how rapid snow melts in the high country or how much rainfall occurs.  Either way, each river is unique and is affected by CFS differently.  Next time you’re looking to go fishing, give a look at what is happening with your rivers CFS.

Check out our stream flows & charts on our fly shop website!
